The Joke of NCAA Suspensions

The college football season begins this Thursday. Over the past seven months, we have heard one of three topics: Alabama going for a three-peat, Ohio State improving on perfection, and Johnny Manziel's off-the-field issues.

On Monday, Manziel reportedly met for over six hours with the NCAA at College Station. Reports say that this meeting is to determine whether or not Manziel accepted money for his autograph and if he will be suspended for any games in the 2013 season.

I can promise you that he will not be suspended, and not because he is innocent.

The Hypocrisy of Sports

All sports groups are becoming more and more hypocritical. When will the hypocrisy stop? The NFL fines for "illegal" hits make no sense when career-ending hits don't get penalized. The NCAA profits on the names of players on their online store, yet will suspend players like Terrelle Pryor and now maybe Johnny Manziel for profiting. They even sell Joe Paterno "409 Wins" memorabilia when the NCAA themselves vacated over 100 wins. MLB wants to protect its players, yet suspends a pitcher for throwing at Alex Rodriguez, and that suspension isn't long enough for Ryan Demptster to miss a start.

Steve Pederson Extension - How Pitt Fans Should Feel

Pittsburgh athletic director Steve Pederson has signed a five-year contract extension that will keep him at the school through 2018.

Everybody that knows me recognizes that I am not a Steve Pederson fan. I have been one of his biggest critics throughout his Pitt tenure and I was critical of him at his time in Nebraska. I am not going to go that far deep into the Nebraska fiasco but all I have to say is that anybody down in big red country will tell you that he is not a beloved figure for his alma mater. He was fired after 5 disastrous years and Pitt literally hired him back the next day. (He was also the AD at Pitt from 1998-2002).

With the news of his recent contract extension, there has been a mixture of reactions from alumni and fans about their feelings towards Pederson. I am going to create a pros and cons list of Pedersons actions while at Pitt and I want the readers of the article to tell me how they feel about him.

NCAA Student-Athlete Problems

What's wrong with sports? Student-athletes are no longer in existence. The student part is completely gone, and all that matters is the money. Between Kevin Hart wanting to be a part of "the show" by making a fake recruiting story, and college athletes leaving early for the money (and/or because they cannot pass a class), things are in need of change.

NCAA Reports Newest Rules Violators: The NCAA

Over the years, fans have scratched their heads at odd rules and where silly little violations have occurred. West Virginia had to report a violation for their players wearing too MUCH padding at a practice. Joe Paterno reported what ended up being a violation for, while taking his typical walk around campus, watching a player throw the football around outside of his dorm room. Urban Meyer got in trouble for wishing a recruit good luck in his upcoming game! Oh, and don’t forget about the spread to go with your bagels…

Most of those can go overlooked due to the harsh and necessary actions against institutions, dating all the way back to the West Point academic cheating scandal. Recent punishments against North Carolina, Miami, USC, and Penn State have shown all members of the NCAA that they need to shape up their act.

Maybe the school members aren’t the only ones in need of shaping up. Maybe the NCAA as a whole should do so first. Maybe they should practice what they preach.

Bill O'Brien and Penn State

James of 360 Sports Network joins the Ryan, Christian, and Ellis on Youngstown Sports Radio 1240 WBBW. They discuss head coaching issues in Cleveland and the rest of the country, and James talks about the possibility of Penn State coach Bill O'Brien making the jump to the NFL. Oh, and of course talk about the sanctions and Governor Tom Corbett suing the NCAA.

Check out www.360SportsNetwork.com for all of your sports updates! Follow us on twitter @3SNetwork! We love to debate, so come debate with us!

He Said / He Said - Bill O'Brien and Penn State

Seven head coaches in the NFL were fired on "Black Monday" after week 17. Of course, that meant that names would start popping up as possibilities to take over these head coaching positions.

That also of course meant that Bill O'Brien's name would pop up as a possible candidate. But, what wasn't as expected was the reports of O'Brien seemingly wanting so badly to leave the Penn State program.

So how do the 3SN Nittany Lions feel about this whole situation? Dot and Dellav sound off on the state of Happy Valley.

What's Wrong with the Bowl Games?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: the college football bowl season! Over the next three-and-a-half weeks, 70 teams will partake in 35 bowl games across the country. It is one of the biggest and best traditions in American sports.

It also might be too much.

There are many things that are wrong with the bowl season in my mind, not even mentioning the word “playoffs” or “BCS.” Trust me, I absolutely LOVE seeing teams play in bowl games every year, but there are some flaws to the system. Maybe you agree, maybe you do not. But one thing is clear to me: some things need to change in the college football postseason BEYOND going to a four- or eight-team playoff format.

2012 Heisman Trophy Preview

Tonight, history will be made when the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner is announced.

Will Collin Klein be the first Kansas State player to win the Heisman?
Will Johnny Manziel become the first freshman to win the Heisman?
Will Manti Te’o be the first solely defensive player to win the Heisman?

These are the questions that will be left unanswered until Saturday night. But that’s no fun. So, we’ll break down each of the Heisman candidates and their accolades. Then each of us will make our Heisman vote.

The Heisman Trophy is awarded to the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. All three have shown excellence, but which has been the most outstanding player (not the best player) during the 2012 season? Who do you think deserves to win?

Onward to Victory!

Unbelievable! Something I never thought I would see.

I was three years old the last time Notre Dame was ranked #1 in the AP poll (back in 1993). I wasn’t even born the last time the Rally Sons won a National Championship. Yet all I have heard about my entire life is the glory of Notre Dame and how great they used to be.

Yet for my entire life, when Notre Dame fans would sing of her, it would be of the glory days and certainly not in the 21st century.  Yet everybody would get to see the Irish week in and week out due to their contract with NBC, and of course everybody would sound off about how much of a joke they are or how they don’t deserve to make a BCS bowl. Like in any sport, unless you were a part of the group (in this case, a son of Notre Dame our Mother), then you forget about “her fame” of the past and see only the “now” in front of you.

Pitt Script - New Uniform Design

360 Sports Network's Panther Chronicler Alex Dellaverson had the pleasure of speaking with Bryan Brunsell, an avid supporter of University of Pittsburgh athletics and one of the major influence in the "Bring Back the Script" campaign with Pitt athletics. Check out his Facebook and Twitter pages for more information about the Script Pitt campaign. In a Q&A from Panther to Panther, Bryan explains his campaign and why Pitt should return to their former colors. Bryan is a true image of the 360 concept - a passionate and dedicated sports fan who has something important to say - and we are proud to let his voice be heard!
