Fantasy Football Picks - Week 3

It’s time to set your lineups for week 3 of the NFL fantasy football season. Some trends are beginning to take shape now, while other teams (cough, Dallas Cowboys, cough) make you wonder what team will show up from week to week. What trends do you trust and not trust? There is no definite answer.

It’s now time to give your our fantasy picks for week 3. We’ll each give you a guy to start at each position, a guy to sit, a sleeper play, and somebody to look for on the waiver wire. We also encourage your start ‘em / sit ‘em questions each week, so please send in your questions!

Quarterback:

	Start ‘em	Sit ‘em	Sleeper Pick	Waiver Wire
James Dotson:	Ben Roethlisberger (at OAK) – The lack of a run game plus facing an Oakland team that gave up 35 points to Tannehill last week equals a Big Ben start.	Mike Vick (at ARI) – The Cards held Tom Brady scoreless for the first 58 minutes, and Vick has the injury / turnover concern. There are better options.	Jay Cutler (vs. STL) – He will want a bounce-back game to win back fans after the shouting and shoving match…and he has a great matchup to do it!	Sam Bradford (at CHI) – Facing the 21st ranked pass defense, and he’s shown his success already against DET and WAS. He belongs on your roster as a backup.
Alex Dellaverson:	Robert Griffin III (vs. CIN) – RGIII is a beast. Period. Those who drafted him late got some great value didn’t they.	Mike Vick (at ARI) – The turnovers are just too much for me to play him this week.	Andrew Luck (vs. JAC) – Another favorable matchup at home, and he’s looking amazing right now.	Jay Cutler (vs. STL) – Available in 35% of leagues. Pick him up and start him. The Rams allowed over 200 yards passing to RGIII.
Greg Beshero:	Robert Griffin III (vs. CIN) – RGIII has been a scoring machine so far this year. The Bengals allowed over 300 yards to another rookie by the name of Weeden last week…RGIII could be the top fantasy QB yet again this week.	Peyton Manning (vs. HOU) - …just for now. Let’s see how he adjusts and rebounds from a tough game against Atlanta last week. And it’s against Houston, too, so that’s a bit scary.	Cam Newton (vs. NYG) – It’s tough to think of him as a sleeper, but he’s being overlooked! Brandon Lafell is on fire and Steve Smith is his usual self. And the Giants secondary looks bad.	Alex Smith (at MIN) – You must have him. With all of those targets…
TheLostCause:	Cam Newton (vs. NYG) – This is going to be a big, high scoring game, especially against a poor Giant secondary.	Josh Freeman (at DAL) – Don’t expect a repeat performance from last week. The Dallas secondary is 10x better than New York’s.	Matt Cassel (at NO) – Be ready for a big time rebound game in terms of fantasy stats, especially against the poor New Orleans defense.	Carson Palmer (vs. PIT) – Palmer is in the top 3 in passing yards and pass attempts. They will continue to air out the ball all year. Oh, and PIT has always struggled stopping the Oakland pass game.

Running Back:

	Start ‘em	Sit ‘em	Sleeper Pick	Waiver Wire
James Dotson:	Trent Richardson (vs. BUF) – We knew he’d get his touches. Now with Weeden performing, he’s not facing 8- or 9-man fronts. Every day starter now.	Chris Johnson (vs. DET) – Cassel. Locker. Tebow. Weeden. Manningham. LaFell. All have more rushing yards than CJ2K. SIT HIM DOWN!	Willis McGahee (vs. HOU) – Don’t let the Texans’ D scare you, they haven’t played anybody yet. McGahee is the new Joseph Addai in the Manning system.	Andre Brown (at CAR) – Ahmad Bradshaw is out and David Wilson is in the doghouse with 10 yards in two games and a fumble. It’s Brown’s backfield in a game vs. Carolina’s 28th ranked rush D.
Alex Dellaverson:	Marshawn Lynch (vs. GB) – On MNF, Lynch facing a bad rush defense of GB, especially when they just pound the rock to him.	Michael Turner (at SD) – Atlanta’s running game is terrible, and now facing the top ranked rush defense.	Isaac Redman (at OAK) – He’s showing what he can do, and the yards will increase. But he’s guaranteed a TD.	Mikel LeShoure (at TEN) – He’s supposed to get the start right off of suspension. Get him now.
Greg Beshero:	Maurice Jones-Drew (at IND) – This is a good matchup for MJD. He’s one of many RBs (Richardson, Spiller, Lynch, Mathews) who have a great matchup this week. All are great starts.	Michael Turner (at SD) – Arrested for DUI but will start anyway. It doesn’t matter, as he’s been nothing but disappointing so far this year.	Michael Bush (vs. STL) – Filling in for the injured Forte, it will be interesting to see how many touches he actually gets. We’ll see what happens, but it’s a nice pick that you should surely consider.	Jacquizz Rodgers (at SD) – He should grab the starting job from Turner soon, especially post-DUI.
TheLostCause:	Maurice Jones-Drew (at IND) – He always rips up Indy. But man, RBs are a crapshoot to me this week.	PIT/OAK RBs – Darren McFadden won’t perform against the Steelers, while Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer will only steal each other’s carries.	Mikel LeShoure (at TEN) – Suspended the first two games make this pick a bit of a risk, but Detroit has made it clear that this is LeShoure’s backfield.	Darryl Richardson (vs. CHI) – He finished the game last week with 15 carries and 85 yards. Jackson’s groin injury is one that lingers.

Wide Receiver:

	Start ‘em	Sit ‘em	Sleeper Pick	Waiver Wire
James Dotson:	Dwayne Bowe (at NO) – He’s a TD machine, even without a potent offense. Now he’s facing a struggling NO defense (26th in pass defense).	Pierre Garcon (vs. CIN) – Even if he returns this week, Garcon doesn’t belong in your lineup. He had one big catch (88 yd TD) in week one. You can’t guarantee that type of performance occurring.	Reggie Wayne (vs. JAC) – 100+ yards in week one, 70 yards and a TD in week two. Those who drafted Wayne are reaping the rewards. This trend continues against the hapless Jaguars.	Danny Amendola (at CHI) – He leads the league in targets, 2nd in receptions, 3rd in yards (only behind Giants’ receivers Cruz and Nicks) yet he’s available in over 50% of leagues? PICK HIM UP AND START HIM NOW!
Alex Dellaverson:	Victor Cruz (at CAR) – Who else will Eli throw the ball to? Nicks out, Hixon out, Bradshaw out, and a shootout is coming!	Wes Welker (at BAL) – What’s happened to him? Is this Randy Moss all over again? You have to feel badly for veterans in the Patriot organization.	Danny Amendola (at CHI) – The numbers speak for themselves. The Rams are relevant, thanks to scoring 30 points per game, and it starts with Amendola.	Donnie Avery (vs. JAC) – Still need to worry about a rookie QB, but with 12 Rec, 148 yds, and a TD, he’s a good add especially in PPR.
Greg Beshero:	Mike Wallace (at OAK) – He will have a big day out in Oakland in what could end up as a shootout. Don’t forget Brandon Marshall either, with Cutler yelling or not.	Kevin Ogletree (vs. TB), Anquan Boldin (vs. NE), Santonio Holmes (at MIA) – All three showed the possibility of life early, but have truly been mediocre and underwhelming.	Nate Washington (vs. DET) – He’s getting lots of targets, and is truly Locker’s favorite. It’s just a matter of time with the right matchup (Detroit is as good as any) before he explodes.	Jeremy Kerley (at MIA) – He’s showing promise! He will continue to improve week-to-week and can explode at any moment.
TheLostCause:	Michael Crabtree (at MIN) – Alex Smith looks amazing. He’s averaging 70 receiving yards per game. Now he just needs to find the endzone. Expect it this week.	Eric Decker (vs. HOU) – After a rough outing, it’s time to play Houston. He hasn’t done that great yet anyway. The safe play is to bench Decker until we see how Denver rebounds.	Brandon Gibson (at CHI) – Averaging 50 yards and a TD per game so far. And I’ll bet you haven’t even heard his name this year!	Brandon LaFell (vs. NYG) – Only owned in 35% of leagues. And he’s on the field more than any other Panther receiver.

Tight End waiver wire pickups: Martellus Bennett, Dante Rosario, Dennis Pitta.

The Pigskin Blink will be hitting you daily, starting tomorrow. For today, lets give you a few sits and starts!

Matthew Stafford will be a beast today against a tough SF defense. However, this contest is looking like a shootout, yielding a projected 40 completion out of 55 attempts, 400+yards passing and 4TD & 1INT kind of a day!. Robert Griffin III looked great week one (320 yards passing, with 2 touchdowns and 40+ yards on the ground). This week, look for him to man-handle the St. Louis Rammies, 300+ yards, with 3TD and possibly 1-2 interceptions. Also, to keep your heads out of water, stick on Peyton Manning against Hotlanta, and Alex Smith to throw more touchdowns than interceptions (we can only hope).

It's a great day to be a Lancer

These aren't your Lancers of old.

The Neshannock (New Castle, PA) Lancers football team is usually only known as holding the record (or at least claiming to hold) for most consecutive losses in WPIAL history.

Today, they just pulled off one of the biggest upsets in WPIAL history, defeating the WPIAL #2 ranked Sto Rox Vikings 35-34 in an instant classic.

Pennsylvania College Football Woes - What to expect for Pitt and Penn State

Pittsburgh and Penn State are making their Keystone State fans uneasy. Both teams started the year 0-2, with Pitt losing at home to FCS Youngstown State 31-17 and on the road to conference rival Cincinnati 34-10, Penn State losing to Ohio at home 24-14 and at Virginia 17-16.

Is there any relief in sight for either team? Can a season be salvaged in either Happy Valley or along the Three Rivers?

We asked the 3SN experts. Panther Chronicler Dellav and Nittany Narrator Dot give their insight and opinions as to the future of their respective 2012 seasons.

Alex Zanardi - A True Competitor Never Gives Up.

In life there are many ups and downs.

Eleven years ago, Alex Zanardi was in the lowest point of his career. The 2-time CART champion, former Indianapolis 500 starter, and former Formula1 competitor, was having a difficult 2001 season with CART's Mo Nunn Racing. He was 22nd in the points out of 27 racers. But on September 15, 2001, in the Lausitzring in Germany, Zanardi showed the world again his true potential. He worked his way to the front of the pack and was leading the race with 13 laps to go when he makes his last pit stop. As he rejoins the track, his car spins and heads straight across the racing circuit. One car narrowly misses Zanardi's machine, but the next car of Alex Tagliani cannot avoid Zanardi as he tries to regain control.

Tagliani's car crashes into Zanardi at 200 mph. The reinforced nose of the Canadian's car impacts Zanardi's machine right behind the front wheels, the weakest part of the race car, literally ripping the car in two. Both of Zanardi's legs are ripped off of his body in the crash. The result should be fatal.

It wasn't. And the story is just beginning.

Saint or Sinner?

360 Sports Network has heard about the supposed "Ten Commandments" of fantasy football. But, are they really that important? Deacon Dellav, Monsignor Greg, and Cardinal Dotson break down the commandments and must state if they are a saint or a sinner. Do you abide by the commandment? Or do you need to be forgiven. So before you say you MUST take running back early or you MUST wait until the last round for a kicker, see what the 3SN crew have to say.

Panther Chronicles: YSU?

Really? Like for real? YSU? The more I think about it, the more I realize that us Pitt fans shouldn't be that shocked about what happened Saturday. They are Pitt. They do things like that. Actually, they do it quite often. The loss doesn't mean the season is over, or that they can't win the conference. It just means they aren't really giving us much of a reason to believe in them. In 2008 they lost to Bowling Green and finished 9-4. That was also the year they finished the season with a loss to Oregon State in the Sun Bowl 0-3. Some people are ready to write off Paul Chryst, but I'm not. Honestly, this team just isnt really good. The defense is pathetic and even though Tino had an "okay" game, he still should not even be playing division 1-A football. Ray Graham playing was a nice surprise, but he obviously isn't near his old self. YSU is a really good FCS team and even before the game I heard that they would be tough from a lot of websites. I'm willing to give Pitt one more chance before I write them off for the season, but It doesn't look good. I also honestly believe if Pitt would've kept Wannstedt, they would have been farther along then they are now. People said it was time for him to go, but he kept the program stable with 8-9 win seasons and bowl games. The program took a step back when Peddy decided to let him "resign" at the end of 2010 season. I think Pitt is going to be rebuilding for a few more years and they shouldn't even be at this point. I can honestly see Pitt having losing seasons for the next 3 years. At least Chryst took the names off the back of the jerseys so the players don't have to have the dishonor of having the fans know who they are and that they play for Pitt. Ugh. This shouldn't even be happening. If the Paul Chryst hire does't pan out, then I only got 1 thing to say: BRING BACK THE STACHE!

We Still Are

All eyes are on Happy Valley today for the first game in the post-Joe Paterno era. Lots of things have changed at Penn State in the past eight months...a new coach has arrived, the statue has been taken down, the wins have been revoked, some players have left, the jerseys now have names on them. So much has changed...but one thing has not changed: the dedication of the players, coaches, and fans of the school.

Little League - Isn't It About the Kids?

For every great story, there is one not so great. The Little League World Series is no different.

For the first time in the history of the LLWS, an African team made the trip to Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The team from Lugazi, Uganda, was certainly the fan favorite. The team had always played with minimal equipment and in bare feet before making the World Series. None of the players' parents could afford the trip to the United States.


But that doesn't mean they didn't have support. The town of Williamsport adopted the Uganda team as their own. Other Little Leaguers, too, took in the kids from Lugazi. One player from New Castle, Indiana, looked unhappy when talking to his mother one day. "Mom, they (the Uganda players) have nothing!" Well, they made sure that changed. Three truck loads of clothes and other items made the trip a couple of days later from New Castle to Williamsport, all for the team from Africa.

Their story is much more important than the outcome of their games. Uganda lost their two games, 9-3 to Panama (who is 2-0 and facing Japan in the battle of the last unbeaten teams in the International Pool) and 12-0 to Mexico (who is now 3-1 after defeating Curacao in the next-to-last elimination game in the International Pool, and will play the Japan/Panama loser).

Sadly, those two opponents (Panama and Mexico) are making headlines for something other than the results of the kids on the field.  They are in trouble for not following the Mandatory Play Rule.

Gymnastics Controversy

The scoring system, the judges, the deductions, the gymnast. That's what normally determines (in order) the score of a gymnastics routine. That's what determines who is the best gymnast in the world.

This year in London, however, something else is determining who will win the gold medal: a technicality.

Last night in the women's all-around qualifications, Americans Allie Raisman, Gaby Douglas, and Jordyn Wieber finished 2-3-4 in the standings. 24 women qualify for the all-around finals later this week. However, Jordyn Wieber is not one of them due to a rule with allows for "spreading the wealth" of Olympic glory.

This is sickening.

Oscar Pistorius - Unfair Advantage?

"Every Olympics has at least one story that leaves a giant, enduring footprint. Just guessing, but this summer it will be about the sprinter with no feet." ~ Bill Plaschke, LA Times

I think that best sums up what is happening right now with the 2012 Olympic Games.

The story that Bill Plaschke is referencing is that of South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius. The 25-year-old known as the 'Blade Runner' will be competing in the London Olympic Games in the 400m and 4x400m relay.

The reason Pistorius will be the story? He's a double amputee. Pistorius will become the first amputee track athlete to compete in the Olympics.

The story, of course, comes with controversy. He runs using prosthetic legs called Cheetahs. These carbon fiber artificial limbs leads to the discussion: Does Pistorius have an unfair advantage over his competition?

My answer: Are you serious?

He Said / He Said - Post-Freeh Report, What's Next?

Penn State is at the top of the sports news again following Thursday's release of the Freeh Report. The internal investigation led by former FBI agent Louis Freeh uncovered more documents and email communication between the powers of the University regarding Jerry Sandusky. 
 
In the 48 hours now since the release of that report, the public outcries have come swarming in. "Tear down the Paterno statue outside Beaver Stadium." "Take his name off of the library." "Penn State deserves the death penalty."

These outcries come from everywhere. They come from random twitter accounts in Idaho, former coaches like Bobby Bowden, and hot-headed reporters like Stephen A. Smith who creates controversy with extreme comments just so his voice is heard.

Alright Pirates fans, here's what we can look forward to in the next couple months now that the home run derby is over and the all star game will prove to be lackluster once again. Since Cutch didn't win the home run derby, pack it in Bucco fans think things will be rough. No, not really. There are a couple factors that I think about when watching this year's Buccos that makes me think there is a light at the end of the 19 year long tunnel.

It's time to give our fantasy racing predictions for the weekend of July 6-8. Again, the IndyCar predictions follow the rules of IndyCar Nation's fantasy game, while the Formula1 predictions follow the Pirelli GP Challenge format.

Poor Images in Sports Apparel

After the Adidas shackle-shoes debacle a couple of weeks ago, the world was reminded just how brainless some people can be. The shoes, designed supposedly to strap to your ankles so they will remain attached to you despite your crazy moves on the court, looked more like "slave shoes" due to the straps that looked more like shackles, naturally and well-deservedly causing outrage among the sporting community.

Thankfully, the shoes were repealed without any second thought, BEFORE they were distributed to the public.

But, just when we thought apparel controversy ended, Wimbledon began, and more bad memories (or good, depending on your point of view) were brought forward.

So, without further adieu, 3SN presents some of the more controversial apparel (both by the players and by the fans) to appear in the world of sports. Some were on purpose, some unintentional, and some that just leave you scratching your head.

Jeneba Tarmoh vs. Allyson Felix - NEVERMIND

This afternoon, Jeneba Tarmoh withdrew from contention for one of the three positions on the US women's 100m team. Tonight at 8:00 Eastern, Tarmoh was supposed to compete in a winner-take-all runoff against Allyson Felix. The two women had tied for third place in the finals of the US Olympic Trials last weekend, each running the 100 meters in 11.068 seconds.

Many are disappointed in Tarmoh for not going for the win and for the Olympic berth. Others are disappointed with Felix, who already qualified for the 200m dash and is a gold medal favorite in London, not withdrawing since she is a lock to race in London and Tarmoh is not. I'm disappointed at the process, especially in one of the few Olympic events out there where there is no questioning who is the winner.
