In this year’s “Month of May” series, on each day leading
up to the Indianapolis 500 on May 26, a different topic about the race or about
Indianapolis will be discussed. Each of these topics will be ranked to create
special “fields of 33” regarding the Indy 500. I hope you enjoy, and I hope you
learn something about Indianapolis and the Indy 500, the Greatest Spectacle in
Racing.
We are less than 24 hours away from crowning the winner
of the 97th Running of the Indianapolis 500! As an extra bonus, we bring to you
the Field of 33 Sounds of the 500! All of these sounds are regulars at the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Hope you enjoy!

33. Banner Planes and
blimps will pass over and around the track all day!
32. Shrieks at the Coke
Lot Rat on the way to the track!
31. “Woooooo!” from
the Wooo Girls in the Snake Pit
Row 10
30. Discrepancies in
sound between the two engine manufacturers. Take some time to try to hear the
difference in sound between Honda and Chevy engines. It’s pretty cool!
29. “Ewwwww” and
Smooch as the winner kisses the bricks!
28. Airhorns buzzing
all around the track, especially when a crash occurs.

27. Buzz of
the crowd below walking along Georgetown Road.
26. Wisp of
the breeze and the Flutter of the
flags blowing in the wind.
25. Clank of
the patrons walking up all of those steps to their seats!

24. Boos for
Danica (or now that she’s gone, cheers and jeers!)
23. Swearing at
your pool driver who keeps falling getting passed. Oh wait, he just crashed.
YAY!
22. Encouragement for
Danica walking up the pits towards Ryan Briscoe, who knocked her out of the
race in a pit lane accident!

21. Chusck of
the team radios and track radios on your scanner.
20. Blowing of
the track dryers, like a huge hair dryer, making sure the track is dry enough
for the cars to run.
19. Pitter-Patter of
rain…let’s hope not!
Row 6 – Fan Sounds
18. Screams of
the fans as the green flag drops and cars SCREAM into turn one.
17. Yells for
the Window Over Terre Haute to get here already!
16. Groans for
yet another Andretti misfortune…

15. Gasps at
the big wreck like Conway in 2010…or the untimely wreck like Hildebrand in 2011
or Sato in 2012.
14. “TFSSSSSTK” at
a near miss on the track…as in a huge intake of air through your teeth as you
cannot believe that the two cars didn’t touch!
13. Thud of a
car downshifting as it enters Turn 4 and ducks into the pits. It sounds like
something has broken on the car when they downshift and is tough to hear and
not be concerned.

12. Crunch of
an empty beer can being stomped upon by a partially intoxicated attendee.
11. Squealing of
tires as a car leaves the pits. This could also refer to the squealing voice of
Florence Henderson, but she’s not attending this year.
10. Shrills of
the whistles belonging to traffic cops. “LOOK AT ME WHEN I’M TALKING TO YOU!

the fans thanking the veterans during the military laps before the race.
8. Popping of
the top of a beer can. You’ll hear
it quite often I’m sure.
7. Deep, smooth
voice of Tom Carnegie booming over the PA system at the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway. Even though he is gone, his voice will still echo over the hallowed
Brickyard.

fly-by overhead!
5. Thud of a
car hitting the SAFER barrier. It’s a sound that you cannot appreciate until you
experience it first-hand.
4. Silence of
taps. 300,000 fans in attendance, and you could hear a pin drop.

2. Shaky, yet
